This is a quick review of episode 6×12. As always the opinions are my own.
This episode had 3 seemingly very different characters converge and ultimately mirror each other. This episode was this journey of sorts towards redemption.
Robert – Spirals of control when he loses his son and his family becomes incomplete.
David – Spirals out of control during this shared sleeping curse. His family becomes incomplete because Snow isn’t there with him.
Killian – Spirals out of control after he loses Liam and things get worst after he loses Milah. He has no more family to speak of but the crew that mutinies with him.
This episode showed us what these 3 men’s rock bottom looked like and why they decided to change.
so despite the fact that i still shiver deliciously thinking about colin’s delivery of the “dead men tell no tales” line, i finally put my finger on why that whole stabbing-robert-to-shut-him-up scene felt so random and OOC for hook
because the dude was ALL ABOUT his ruthless rep – yet only killing when it involved people who “deserved” it
why WOULDN’T hook want everyone to know he’d killed a bunch of king’s men and stolen said king’s money?? isn’t that, like…. impressive??
i mean, presumably he was still persona non grata in the kingdom from which he’d commandeered the Jewel of the Realm, and there was an entire freaking episode about him defending his ruthless reputation to blackbeard
so aside from the fact that robert was begging for his life, and mentioned his son in the process of begging (which surely would have struck a note with the pirate who practically adopted baelfire) i am still not seeing why hook would have wanted to bother killing the guy to shut him up
he LIKED being known as a villainous badass, and he’s all about running his sassy mouth off and standing up to to kings and queens – we’ve seen that with cora, regina, poseidon, and (even after he gave up villaining) freakin’ hades, lord
of the underworld. why would he be even the slightest bit wary of king george?
so was he just…. in a particularly bloodthirsty mood? that’s not something we’ve seen before. he generally isn’t shown killing someone unless they either pose a danger to him, or they specifically insult/offend him (aka the guys who owned his rings, his father, blackbeard, etc.). killing out of sheer spite is a regina trait
idk maybe if they’d had him explain that he’d had bad run-ins with king george before? or if we saw a scene where his crew were questioning his ruthlessness, and he needed to make a point?
but even then, hook always had this weird sense of nobility towards the helpless – and that would include a pleading pathetic dad tied to a cart and being harassed by a king’s guards, right??
and he remembered his face. fifty-odd years later, he still remembers the guy’s face. “carelessly killing when it suits him” just doesn’t jive with “has an eidetic memory for all his victim’s faces bc he’s incredibly self-loathing”
so at the very least, we should have been given a logical, in-world reason why he up and stabbed robert
This is just a speculation (so disclaimer, a salt shaker to go along with it), and I’m going to tag my co-conspirator @j-philly-b (if you have more to add, go for it) because she and I speculated this, offline, some months ago, and now with episode 6×12 out of the way, it just seems clearer that Killian’s mission will be to break Snowing out of the sleeping curse for the reasons that we know.

So I have no clue why Aladdin, Jasmine and Jafar are part of the episode, other than the show doesn’t know when to cut it losses (or ABC wanted them to do this story), I don’t know how those 3 fit into all of this. But apparently, Jasmine and Ariel know each other. I guess there’s a possibility that mute Ariel may have traveled to Agrabah because Eric was headed there as part of his long voyage.

Friendly reminder that Killian Jones can canonically slip out of blades to the throat in like 3 seconds flat but he didn’t. He let David hold a knife to his throat with madness in his eyes because he knew that in that moment, David needed to feel in control of something.
And that it had to be his decision to give up his revenge.
I think sometimes he just feels like a charming family babysitter trying to keep everyone alive when they are absolutely determined to get themselves killed.
…the breath flies out of her as she strains to get a good look at him. He’s hardly elderly but definitely older by a few decades, his hair still thick but generously shot through with streaks of silver. The laugh lines she loves so much have deepened, the start of a few wrinkles on his forehead, and there’s a new scar along the side of his jaw. He’s beautiful. Older and more distinguished but still breathtakingly handsome, his profile unchanged by the additional years on his face.
