Happy Valentine’s Day

OK, so this is kind of non-traditional, but I’m obsessed with the idea that folkloric versions of our holidays are celebrated in the Enchanted Forest (in my head, Killian celebrates the winter solstice), so I went off on a bit of a research kick for Valentine’s day.

SO, OK. The connections between Valentine’s Day and the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia are pretty much that they were celebrated around the same time (ides of February). Lupercalia as a festival is a bit of a mystery – it might have been a day sacred to shepherds who would sacrifice to Pan as a woodland deity, it might have been a day to honour the wolf that suckled Romulus and Remus – 

We do know that after the rites of the day were completed, the Luperci priests would run around the forum nude save for a loincloth made from wolf pelts, carrying a strip of animal hide with which they would slap the wrists and hands of women as a fertility boon. So yeah, super sexy Valentine times right there.

That doesn’t sound like an Enchanted Forest celebration to me, so instead it’s an ancient Rome AU sitch with a little nod to the beanstalk/bandage scene. I’m imagining that David, who comes from the family line that of shepherds that became the Luperci priests, was meaning to participate in the rites, as he does every year, but his scoundrel of a best mate made off with his furs in the wee morning because he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to quite overtly let the gorgeous-yet-somewhat-prickly woman that had captured his heart know that he most certainly was interested. And if he flustered her a bit, well, that’s all part of the fun 😀
