I think the fact that the fandom likes to believe Killian would stay ignorant to the modern world devices is one that always gets me, or that he would be and “adorable idiot” when it comes to things. I mean, the man lived 300 hundred years, adapted to becoming an orphan, a slave, a naval lieutenant, a pirate captain, an amputee, then a hero. He’s smarter than most people in Storybrooke, so I think he would learn how to use modern devices rather quickly.
But he chooses to go the old fashioned route because he finds them “better.” He’d rather walk to Granny’s then drive, he’d rather sit on the porch with a book on a rainy night instead of watching a movie, he’d rather leave little notes for Emma around the house then send her a text message, and he’d rather make up stories and have Hope use her imagination then have her play with the electrical toys.
And the overall plot one, Season 4. I fucking loved Season 4 (the only exception being the plot with Lily) and I thought it was amazing. It’s one of my favorite seasons and I’ll defend it til the day I die.
He learnt ancient Greek. Ancient. Greek. Now, here you have a high school formation that makes you study Greek during 5 years. At the end you have a big ass maturity exam in which, most of the times, you have to translate (I don’t remember if from Italian to Greek to the other way around) a piece of literature. Now, one of my friends went to that kind of school and loved Greek, but at her exam people asked her to pass them her translation – and she gave them one wrong because aehm, she kind of reasonably hated them. Anyhow, my point is: Killian has probably had less than 5 years to learn ancient Greek and 300 years later he still can translate it in the blink of an eye, he can very well learn how to work a microwave or something. Also, didn’t we all have to learn and still struggle? Don’t you need to help your family when they ask you how something works?
ALSO! There’s a huge plothole many don’t look at: Storybrooke has, technically, lived T the same day for 28 years, everyone did the same things everyday besides Henry – that’s my take on it. If they have been stuck in time in 1983, EVERYTHING that has happened between ‘83 and 2011 never reached them, no new technology (see the computers at the station), and also no pop culture. When Henry tells Killian about sequels and he’s confused, Charming should be, too, because a) the man’s been in a coma the whole time and b) when he woke up, when exactly did he have the time to watch 28 years worthy of movies? Henry might have during the missing year, but David, well, enchanted forest doesn’t have a good signal, I gather.
Sometimes I honestly wonder if he was with anyone after Milah. He loved her so much and I wonder if he ever paid off the bar wenches back then the way he did in the missing year.
I actually have a head canon about this. I do think he was with women (it was hundreds of years and he’s a man LOL) but I don’t think he kissed anyone. I could see him seeing that as being too intimate and he wouldn’t want to do that because of Milah. Which could also explain why he’s so fuckstruck after kissing Emma. 🙂
So I was thinking about it, and everyone always whines that Killian’s story always revolved around Emma, and they also whine that season 6 ruined CS, and Killian has no friends because of Emma but let’s break season 6 down, and show you all the good friend moments.
I’m seeing a lot of discussion about this on my dash, and wanted to add in what I think is a very important point in regards to Wish Hook’s redemption, without post hijacking…
The only reason (IMO) that Wish Hook’s redemption arc works at all is because of OG Hook’s, not in spite of it (or in contrast to it).
The reason why we know Wish Hook can be a better person, and has that capacity for it, is because of OG Killian having already done it. Without the first five seasons of seeing Killian go from being the revenge-thirsty pirate to the redeemed hero, Wish Hook suddenly going from this
to this
Doesn’t connect. Because we wouldn’t understand what’s going on in his head here if we didn’t already know how he thinks and what he’s motivated by.
They aren’t mutually exclusive. You need the knowledge brought about by OG Hook’s story (including the very important backstory that they both share, as well as OG Killian’s story post-meeting Emma), otherwise everything that comes from this shift in Wish Hook’s demeanor and behavior from here on out falls flat.
In that same sort of vein, because of the first five seasons of Killian’s redemption playing out on screen, it negates the need for them to have to fit it into the story in Season 7. It’s not that Wish Hook doesn’t have to pay for his past sins, we just already know he will.
Why?
Because an alternate version of him already did.
And as this show repeatedly emphasized over and over, they are the same person at their core… they’ve just gone through different journeys to both get to that place where they are the redeemed hero.
With the show coming to an end, I’d thought I’d make a post listing my favorite scenes with different characters. Yeah, he’s my fav, and the other half of my OTP, so he gets three scenes per season.
This is supposed to be about positivity, so I please ask you keep your hate to yourself. Thanks!
I do see a lot of “WHook v OGHook” discourse and from what I understand of it, a lot of it seems to revolve around the idea that WHook’s redemption is more meaningful because he became a parent and he had to be a parent in order to have a complete redemption arc. And the metas written are great and insightful and I very much respect the people who wrote them, but I disagree with them.
Betrayal brings out the most brutal weapon in Killian Jones’ arsenal – his words. He has a way of saying just the right thing that will cut right to the heart of a person, deeper and more insidious than his sword or hook ever could. A man as perceptive as Killian will find a way to turn a person’s deepest troubles against them with one softly uttered remark. For as much as his anger feeds his flair for the dramatic, nothing quite matches his wicked words when he’s hurting. The harsher the hurt, the harsher Hook’s words become (and the fact that Emma gets the brunt of his most damaging jabs shows just how deeply the betrayal and hurt runs).
Ok but are we gonna talk specifically about the things Killian Jones left behind???
I’m salty AF over the sneak peeks and this show in general but I still gotta talk about what my man Killian Jones left behind.
A lot of people have talked about how he left no note for Emma but that she should have know because he left his most treasured possessions behind. but I don’t see it that way. I think maybe the things he left WERE the message.
Now I’m not saying he expected her to decipher the contents of that sea chest and know he left in some quest with Nemo to be a better man.
But I do think the items were meaningful and should have tipped Emma off as to his state of mind.
The FLASK:
Hooks got a drinking problem – and t is a problem. He knows this. Emma knows this. When have you ever seen him without that flask? The answer is never.
But here he is thinking he’ll be stuck for an indefinite amount of time in a submarine with Captain “be the bEst version of yourself” Nemo who probably doesn’t have barrels of rum on his Nautilus…and Killian Jones has left his run behind. He’s planning on doing this self seeking journey stone cold SOBER.
Being a better man, the man Emma deserves, means getting his problem with alcohol in check.
The Spyglass:
He won’t need this in a submarine perhaps – but we know from flashbacks that the Nautilus makes routine stops above land in far off and unknown places. A spyglass could come in handy. And Hooks always carries it in every previous adventure. But it’s also one of the most pirate-y things he owns. It’s a remnant of the man he used to be and he’s leaving ALL that in the past. He’s even got a new jacket for this adventure – it’s a longer cut but NOT his pirate coat. He left all the pirate swag behind.
The Ring:
He Liam’s ring with Emma. Clearly he still doesn’t feel fit to wear it. And he gave it to Emma for a reason. He’s left it behind with her now. She rejected the engagement ring on the terms that he figure out his shit and get back to her but he’s leaving the one token he has left of his brother. That means something. And I think Emma’s going to realize that.
The Jolly Roger:
His former home. Hook doesn’t see his ship as his home any longer. His home is with Emma. If he were leaving for good he would have sailed away on his ship – but he left the Jolly behind in the harbor. And he left the things that mattered most to him, his most treasured belongings, in his new HOME. With Emma.
That’s HUGE.
It’s clear from what he left behind that Hook isn’t abandoning Emma to go back to his old ways. He was doing what she wanted – trying to become the man she agreed to marry.
He just doesn’t realize that he already was that man.
(basically because the writers forgot what they wrote like 10 episodes ago and don’t realize this is a tired ass plot that we’ve been through countless times but… whatever, I’m just trying to make the best of the shit show that is this writing)
So anyways, it’s clear that Hook isn’t a “no good pirate” – based on what he took with him, and more importantly what he DIDN’T, Emma should know that – whether Hook, or Gideon, left a note or not.
AGREED. @lenfaz & I were just chatting on Sunday about how we wish there would be a spin-off of Emma, Killian, Nemo, and Liam II having adventures on the Seven Seas via the Jolly Roger and Nautilus.
But seriously, Killian has no family or loved ones left besides Emma. As kind as the Charmings are, they’ll always be Emma’s family first. And rightfully so. Killian needs and deserves to have his own support system outside of his partner. Nemo would provide that.
just want to say, I LOVE Killian’s reaction when David asks him for help with his dad. Like “yeah okay but are you sure you don’t want to ask my girlfriend, she’s the sheriff and the Savior and magical and awesome, she’s definitely better at this than I am” without a hint of embarrassment or swallowing of male ego or pride. If anything, he’s a bit hesitant to do the thing himself, because he knows Emma’s better suited to this than he is, and that’s just the truth. And he has no qualms admitting it or pointing it out.
