It’s that time of year again, Christmas Countdown with your favourite ONCE characters and additional guest stars from this year. But instead of 12 Days of Christmas, Our characters will be referencing Old Christmas Classics!

How many times does Killian have to confront his past demons?
Just asking…for a friend.
Actually some bigger questions….
Why is it just Killian that seems to have to always confront his past demons?
Why is he the only one that seems to have to do things the hard way with no short cuts like some characters get?
Why is he the only one that seems to actually care about making a real sincere effort for the right reasons in being a hero out of Rumple, Regina, and himself?
Why is it just him that understands his past and does not forgive himself yet despite how far he has come and will continue to not forgive himself until he is someone he himself can be proud of?
Why is it just him out of Rumple, Regina, and himself that blames himself for things that were not even his fault (like the faeries in the hat) as well as things that were indeed his fault and admits to them and is truly sorry for them?
I do not understand.
The way I personally look at it is (and of course you can see it differently, but maybe this might help)…
Each of these characters has an archetypal role to fill on the show. They all have their place. They may stray from that role every so often for plot reasons, but they’ll always correct course back to the role eventually.
With Killian, he’s the villain turned hero. The truly redeemed character. And of course he would have to be because he’s the character they had pegged to be the love interest for Emma, the main character. You can’t have your main “good guy” fall in love with one of the villains and not have that villain change at all.
Killian’s challenge on the show will always be his past (in the same way, say, Emma’s challenge will be being the Savior, or Snow’s challenge will be finding the hope in every situation). It one of the thing that I think explains why he has so many years of history behind him. By making him centuries old, that leaves a lot of room for a haunting past to come back and challenge him. With Killian being a redeemed villain, we know he’ll ultimately make the right choice every time now (in contrast to the wrong choice he made in whatever past history we’re seeing each time). It repeats to show that he is worthy of the main heroine, that he’s not reverting, and that he’s learned. It also serves a double purpose because not only is it showing how much Killian has changed, it continues to emphasize how much the other villains haven’t (especially in Rumple’s case, since Rumple is Killian’s foil).
If they stop having Killian confront his demons, he stops serving his purpose on the show. He’s no longer the redeemed villain. He ends up being another Charming, the good guy always doing good and being heroic (I think about Robin who had no role to fill really because they had the GOOD good guy in Charming, and the FORMER BAD GUY good guy in Killian, so Robin was relegated to Regina prop. Which is what is happening to Zelena now too because she also doesn’t fill any specific role anymore. Hasn’t really since she was the “Bad Guy” of the Season for 3B). He becomes ‘boring’ in terms of storytelling. The contrast needs to be there. The reminder that this guy, this amazing, wonderful, devoted guy, fought to be here against his own inner turmoil. That he wasn’t always the good guy, which makes you appreciate him being good now even more. It emphasizes how much he cares for people like Emma and the Charmings.
This is why you see him having these challenges and having to always face them differently then Regina or Rumple. He’s held to a different standard because he has a couple of very specific roles he needs to fill. He was always meant to fill these roles (at least I think – it’s why I find it so easy to understand Killian’s motivations and see where he’s going with them. It’s why I know Killian will always make the right choice in current scenarios when it comes down to it), so they’ve always approached him differently than the other villains (which is why I think the redemption of the other villains always plays a little thin or doesn’t pan out because they weren’t ever meant to be heroes – Killian, on the other hand, was. Now that I think about it, it could be a good explanation why he has a different name from his origin story counterpart).
I love the relationship building they’ve been doing for him. Especially as it concerns Belle and Henry. I also love him taking some of the lessons these heroes and his experience have taught him and applying them, becoming a calmer more controlled man, less fueled by anger and more the Captain Jones type figure using logic and reason. He’s the smartest person in this show imo.
But last night they sacrificed very important aspects of his character as it relates to Emma and his loved ones in order to A.) Make Regina the hero of the AU and B.) Emphasize the flip in circumstances between Killian and David.
It is one thing for him to calmly and rationally handle a situation with the Dark One, like with the crystal in the S5 finale and not immediately fly into a rage, rather he reminded them of Rumple’s true nature.
It’s one thing to have employ strategy in dealing with a foe like in last episode when they tag teamed Rumple.
It is another entirely for him to chill and hang out in a Sheriff station and let others go off to find his True Love who just disappeared and could be dead for all he knows, while he essentially babysits Jasmine.
I’ve seen some rationalizations and they make sense for what we’ve seen for everything and everyone being in danger except Emma Swan.
He’d go to the end of the world for her but he’s going to let Regina handle going to the AU?
Since when has Killian Jones given a fuck that other people have magic? He has faced Gods with zero fucks given and stood to Rumple just last week (trap or no trap he could have killed him instantly).
He didn’t care about Hyde. He didn’t care about Hades or Jekyll but Emma is in real danger and he’s all of a sudden “I don’t have magic, let me sit this one out?”
What? No thank you.

I mean it was clear as day they had to make him act truly OOC in order to make “Regina goes to save Emma instead of him” happen, they ALWAYS fuck up everyone’s characterization when they want Regina to act as a hero, that already says volumes to me but I still find it hard to forgive them when they butcher characterization of my favorite characters like this.
