(Emma Swan grew up alone in a world she didn’t belong with no parents and no friends and no one to take her in. The first man she loved left her behind bars and she was forced to give up her child because she didn’t think she could give him his very best chance. And now she has her parents and her son and a true love that would do anything for her and it makes me feel a lot.)
(Killian Jones grew up in the hold of a ship, sold into slavery by his father and afraid of the shadows that lingered in the dark corners. He lost his brother, his first love, and his hand and was consumed by revenge. He did terrible things and lost himself along the way until he found a home and a family and a true love that brings him back to the man he always wanted to be and it also makes me feel a lot.)
Let me just speak my piece (my peace? piece?) about the Emma’s wedding dress.
Yes, it’s an almost copy of Grace Kelly of Monaco’s dress. I always thought that dress was beautiful, and Kate Middleton’s Alexander McQueen looked a lot like it.
Here’s the thing with Emma and the dress though. Emma was born a princess. The dress may not reflect her 100%, but it reflects where Emma is right now in her life and where she comes from.
The opening episode of the second half of the season was all about how Emma chose her name, how this orphaned, runaway little girl chose her last name, and after almost 6 seasons, it feels like she’s finally completed her journey.
Grace Kelly wasn’t born into royalty, she married into it. And for 28 years of her life, Emma had no clue where she came from or who she was, and when she found out, it was the title of Savior that took over everything in her life.
She got to be a princess for like an hour when she and Killian went to Midas’ ball during the season 3 finale.
And the wedding dress makes her look like a damn fairytale princess. It may not be who she is or will ever be, but it is what she is, she was born a princess.
And the thing is, after the first proposal, Emma told her mother that she never thought this would happen for her, and when she said that, I started wondering if she ever stopped and looked at wedding magazines when she was younger and how she put that dream away because she didn’t think it would happen for her.
A lot of women, when they’re prepping for the big day, what they wanna look like is a princess. It’s the one day they go all fucking out, balls to the wall and live out this fantasy. Maybe Emma wants to live this out too, and I imagine that her parents (mother’s) opinion on this will matter a lot.
This isn’t just Emma Swan, bailsbond person, mother of a teenager, Savior and so on.
This is about Emma Swan, the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, who has both her parents walking her down the isle, getting married to the man she loves.
I just think the dress is part of the journey. And more than that, it’s about her roots.
If people don’t like it, that’s fine. I mean I’m in the middle of hating on Killian’s outfit. Been hating on it for weeks now.
So last night’s episode was very much filled with foreshadowing.
Snow: You have a future. Someone you love.
David: Even though I can’t be with her, I know she’s fighting for me as hard as I’m fighting for her. Emma, I know Hook is out there doing the same for you.
Snow: This magic can reunite anyone who shares true love. It can open the door to Hook…
David: You’re a changed man now, Hook. We’ve all seen it.
If this posts sounds like I’m drunk, I apologize, I promise that I am not. I just really hate Mondays (aslo Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, but I can roll with Fridays).
As usual, these are personal opinions. If you don’t like ‘em, you don’t have to read ‘em (ah, Mondays!)
I like that CS was there when the new sleeping curse was cast on Snowing in 6×07 — like literally standing there at the edge of the glass coffin in the woods — and now they were there when the curse got lifted, and all this was sort of narratively framed by Hook’s recounting of Snow and Charming’s love story and Emma’s importance to her, so kudos where kudos is due
But seriously… Just think about what that means to Emma Swan.
A few days earlier she thought he had walked out on her, like many other people had before. She never had any certainty about anyone in her life. NOTHING was certain. No relationship was guaranteed. She kept her entire life in a box, never formed any real bonds because she would always get burned. She was lonely and prepared to BE lonely… and then there’s this man, who comes in and tells her, that even if her life is uncertain, she can 100% COUNT ON HIM BEING THERE.
“I will always, always be by your side”
These are game changing words for Emma Swan. Why? Because even when she knows how they both feel about each other, even when they have been confirmed as true love and even when he has time and time again proven to her that he has her back, she still had that creeping shadow of doubt crawl back up inside her when he disappeared. So to have him put that ring back on her finger, to hear him say that basically, he knows she could be alive forever or for a week, but that no matter what happens, she can count on him being there, regardless of the circumstances or the outcome.
look, I get that Hook knows Emma. I know he wouldn’t be upset that she thinks he abandoned her.
I also believe that, despite his guilt and self loathing, he would be like…maybe just a little hurt if he knew (as we do) that within an hour of him leaving she was packing up his shit and that same night having drinks and saying it’s time to move on.
being upset FOR emma and being upset WITH Emma are not mutually exclusive
it’s not “hating on emma” to be disappointed in her reaction here.
Also my problem is that the justification for her reaction is that she has abandonment issues and walls, but just the day before she was telling Killian it was not ok for him not to trust her, even if he didn’t tell her about her grandfather because of his issues, and she told him to basically go sort himself out, but then the next day she is 100% not following her own advice and taking something Leroy of all people tells her at face value and not trusting him, so the narrative here is making Emma seem like a hypocrite and that’s really unfair to her character.
But also, yes they BOTH have issues, (that’s the explanation but not a justification btw) but they also have both messed up and it’s OK to be upset with both for those mess ups and want them to do better and to FINALLY move past those damn issues.
Making mistakes is human, but it’s also human dealing with the consequences of those mistakes, fixing what was broken, and learning from them so you don’t make them again, and here’s where my frustration with the show comes because they NEVER let the characters deal with those consequences, I mean I get it they can’t have characters just talk about their issues for 45 minutes, but legit there are never any consequences or resolution to any of the internal characters conflicts, they just move on to the next fight and everything is supposedly magically fixed. That’s for damn certain not realistic, if they had Killian realize he was wrong for trying to run away at first and now having to “fix” what Gideon did in order to get back to Emma, then they better show us some consequences for Emma’s reaction too beyond having to team up with Gideon, at least let them have a conversation about her moving his things to the shed not even a full day after he “left” and have Killian express that while yes, he understands why she thought that and is sorry she felt that way, he’s also hurt by it because otherwise it makes me personally feel like Emma doesn’t love him as much as he loves her, and it breaks my heart to think that because I do know that’s not true.
Ok but are we gonna talk specifically about the things Killian Jones left behind???
I’m salty AF over the sneak peeks and this show in general but I still gotta talk about what my man Killian Jones left behind.
A lot of people have talked about how he left no note for Emma but that she should have know because he left his most treasured possessions behind. but I don’t see it that way. I think maybe the things he left WERE the message.
Now I’m not saying he expected her to decipher the contents of that sea chest and know he left in some quest with Nemo to be a better man.
But I do think the items were meaningful and should have tipped Emma off as to his state of mind.
The FLASK:
Hooks got a drinking problem – and t is a problem. He knows this. Emma knows this. When have you ever seen him without that flask? The answer is never.
But here he is thinking he’ll be stuck for an indefinite amount of time in a submarine with Captain “be the bEst version of yourself” Nemo who probably doesn’t have barrels of rum on his Nautilus…and Killian Jones has left his run behind. He’s planning on doing this self seeking journey stone cold SOBER.
Being a better man, the man Emma deserves, means getting his problem with alcohol in check.
The Spyglass:
He won’t need this in a submarine perhaps – but we know from flashbacks that the Nautilus makes routine stops above land in far off and unknown places. A spyglass could come in handy. And Hooks always carries it in every previous adventure. But it’s also one of the most pirate-y things he owns. It’s a remnant of the man he used to be and he’s leaving ALL that in the past. He’s even got a new jacket for this adventure – it’s a longer cut but NOT his pirate coat. He left all the pirate swag behind.
The Ring:
He Liam’s ring with Emma. Clearly he still doesn’t feel fit to wear it. And he gave it to Emma for a reason. He’s left it behind with her now. She rejected the engagement ring on the terms that he figure out his shit and get back to her but he’s leaving the one token he has left of his brother. That means something. And I think Emma’s going to realize that.
The Jolly Roger:
His former home. Hook doesn’t see his ship as his home any longer. His home is with Emma. If he were leaving for good he would have sailed away on his ship – but he left the Jolly behind in the harbor. And he left the things that mattered most to him, his most treasured belongings, in his new HOME. With Emma.
That’s HUGE.
It’s clear from what he left behind that Hook isn’t abandoning Emma to go back to his old ways. He was doing what she wanted – trying to become the man she agreed to marry.
He just doesn’t realize that he already was that man.
(basically because the writers forgot what they wrote like 10 episodes ago and don’t realize this is a tired ass plot that we’ve been through countless times but… whatever, I’m just trying to make the best of the shit show that is this writing)
So anyways, it’s clear that Hook isn’t a “no good pirate” – based on what he took with him, and more importantly what he DIDN’T, Emma should know that – whether Hook, or Gideon, left a note or not.
Ok but like, I love the fact that Emma can’t stop laughing and smiling while talking about being engaged to Hook in that sneak peek, and she’s this adorable mixture of bashful and excited like girl has got it BAD and I’m so glad she gets to have that moment of just pure happiness that she deserves so much
How you can tell Killian was in emotional turmoil after the post-proposal hug even if you watch on mute: Homeboy didn’t tuck his whole fucking face into the crook of her neck like he usually does because the angst needed to breathe.
I just get very (◡‿◡✿) like my insides go all (◡‿◡✿) at the fact that Emma’s love language is inarguably touch. That whole scene she was just like cupping Killian’s face and rubbing her cheek on his cheek and hugging him and pulling him up to kiss him and softly brushing his fingers with her fingers when she handed him the ring and just (◡‿◡✿) like this is the girl who had zeroskin to skin contact as an infant and zerohugs in her entire childhood and now she’s at a place in her life where she feels safe and feels most comfortable expressing her love through touch because when she was young it was all too rare in her life and oh my goodness it’s. just. so. (◡‿◡✿) .
