It suddenly dawned on me how Emma was always so desperate for friendships, she seems incapable of recognizing her habit of maintaining toxic friendships.
And no, I’m not just talking about her so-called friendship with Regina, which frequently included Regina belittling and talking down to Emma, low-key insulting her for her eating habits or the time she spent in jail (which, by the way, was a direct result of Regina’s actions forcing Emma’s parents to send her away in order to save her life- because Regina was clearly plotting to murder Baby Emma while her curse cloud was spreading across the Enchanted Forest). That or Regina blaming Emma for saving a woman she murdered in the original timeline and making Emma feel like she should apologize for that. (Among other things.)
I’m also thinking about how Emma referred to Lily as her first real friend. Even though that ‘friendship’ was horribly one-sided, and it largely consisted of how Emma could help Lily, with Lily never showing any real concern for Emma and what she wanted. (Such as how Lily didn’t even seem to care when she cost Emma her chances with the ‘GORP’ family.)
Or how Emma considered August to have been her friend, too. Even though he was barely there for her when she was growing up alone and feeling unloved and unwanted. When he had the chance to offer her a bit of hope by telling her that she did have loving parents out there and that they hadn’t wanted to give her up when he swung by as a teenager, he just told her his interpretation of an old bedtime story. Not to mention how it was his idea to set Emma up to go to jail for a crime she didn’t commit. And then kept the money Neal had wanted him to give her. Sure, August did the right thing in the end by trying to warn everyone about Tamara, but whether or not that was enough to make up for everything else is debatable.
It’s such a shame that the show rarely gave Emma a chance to spend time with the people she actually had formed healthy friendships with. People like Ashley and Elsa. Because those two were probably Emma’s first real friends. (Not including Mary Margret, who turned out to be her mother, and Killian Jones, who remains the closest person in Emma’s life.)
Let me just speak my piece (my peace? piece?) about the Emma’s wedding dress.
Yes, it’s an almost copy of Grace Kelly of Monaco’s dress. I always thought that dress was beautiful, and Kate Middleton’s Alexander McQueen looked a lot like it.
Here’s the thing with Emma and the dress though. Emma was born a princess. The dress may not reflect her 100%, but it reflects where Emma is right now in her life and where she comes from.
The opening episode of the second half of the season was all about how Emma chose her name, how this orphaned, runaway little girl chose her last name, and after almost 6 seasons, it feels like she’s finally completed her journey.
Grace Kelly wasn’t born into royalty, she married into it. And for 28 years of her life, Emma had no clue where she came from or who she was, and when she found out, it was the title of Savior that took over everything in her life.
She got to be a princess for like an hour when she and Killian went to Midas’ ball during the season 3 finale.
And the wedding dress makes her look like a damn fairytale princess. It may not be who she is or will ever be, but it is what she is, she was born a princess.
And the thing is, after the first proposal, Emma told her mother that she never thought this would happen for her, and when she said that, I started wondering if she ever stopped and looked at wedding magazines when she was younger and how she put that dream away because she didn’t think it would happen for her.
A lot of women, when they’re prepping for the big day, what they wanna look like is a princess. It’s the one day they go all fucking out, balls to the wall and live out this fantasy. Maybe Emma wants to live this out too, and I imagine that her parents (mother’s) opinion on this will matter a lot.
This isn’t just Emma Swan, bailsbond person, mother of a teenager, Savior and so on.
This is about Emma Swan, the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, who has both her parents walking her down the isle, getting married to the man she loves.
I just think the dress is part of the journey. And more than that, it’s about her roots.
If people don’t like it, that’s fine. I mean I’m in the middle of hating on Killian’s outfit. Been hating on it for weeks now.
So this blog is my happy but snarky place, so I think this will be the last I post about the winter finale. Glad for the clarification, but you shouldn’t have had to explain. Show not tell, Adam.
BECAUSE HE SAID HE LIKES IT WITH THE JACKET ON. If they had done it before you know damn well that would have come up. That’s kind of a big thing. She’s ALWAYS wearing that jacket.
Because she was afraid of her parents walking in. If they had done it before, she wouldn’t being worrying about every little thing like that, it would be no big deal b/c they’ve already been there done that with those worries.
Because they are CLEARLY building up to them doing it by constantly interrupting them. They’re building up the tension so that the moment they FINALLY do it and don’t get interrupted is long awaited and a BIG deal. By them interrupting them like that, they’re teasing the audience for a BIG moment.
The eagerness, the hunger, the giddiness, the feeling of GOD AT LAST from both of them…I realize he just came back from the dead and all but their kiss on his grave was “OMG you’re alive” – we’ve been there done that…to me THIS was “Oh my god I’ve waited for this since and imagined this in my mind since the Beanstalk, keep that jacket on b/c I want this shit to be MEMORABLE.”
I’m probably preaching to the choir here but I hate when this happens to me so – please don’t tar a whole fandom with the same brush? There are some people around who like to stir up trouble, and apparently take joy in trolling people and getting upset and upsetting others. We all know that. But they’re a small – tiny, really – proportion of every fandom.
A while back, I started blocking people who hijacked my posts. I blocked maybe seven or eight people (and not all from the same fandom) and the problem all but disappeared.
Eight people, out of hundreds or thousands. That’s not a lot.
The fact is that it’s almost always the anti posts that make it across fandom lines. The posts that defend people, the nice anons, etc, those usually stay within the fandom. The people who speak up against bullying and trolling when it’s coming from their own fandom often get ignored, because it’s much more fun and dramatic and cathartic to work yourself into a rage and send people hate.
It’s almost always the nasty people who cross fandom lines and invade tags and get ridiculous on Twitter. So what you see from the other side probably will be 90% nonsense. But that doesn’t correlate to 90% of that fandom being horrible. I’ve met people who ship Rumbelle and SQ and CS and OQ and Snowing. I’ve met fans of every character on OUAT. They were all absolutely lovely.
It hurts to be talked about as if you’re the worst, to be called trash, to be accused of this or that, simply because you belong to a group. Simply because you like a certain character. It’s hurtful, and everyone has a right to be hurt by it and angry about it. But the people who do that kind of thing will never listen, or stop, because the problem isn’t you, it’s them. Please don’t pass their nastiness along to other people who’ve done nothing. If you don’t want to be judged by the actions of a few nasty bullies who happen to ship the same thing as you, please don’t judge others that way. Please don’t use being bullied as a reason to become a bully, you’ll only make yourself miserable. Please don’t give the trash talkers more ammunition.
People in other fandoms can’t police others or “collect their trash” anymore than we can. None of us can control what anyone else does and it’s not fair to judge anyone by what other people did or said. Hold it against the person who did it, be mad at the person who did it, absolutely. But it’s not anyone else’s fault.
Sorry, I don’t want to be all preachy or tell anyone what to do. This is just how I see it and what I wish for. Fandom should be fun and happy and full of love, and generalisations just poison it.
