A Happy Ending Begins With Hope
     A Season 7 Canon Divergent

Summary:   Revenge, Kidnapping, Curses, and Redemption all revolve around an unlikely source…Hope.

In Season 2, one of the first conversations between our beloved Captain Swan was when they were preparing to climb the beanstalk.   Captain Hook said to Emma “Whatever story you think you know, my dear” and then he went on to tell her that everything she thought was the truth about Jack and the Beanstalk was wrong.   Season 7 of Once just made me mad and sad and many people would say, “well, without Emma what else can they do….”   I decided to see if that was true.  Could I come up with a story that would have made me watch Season 7 AND use the same parameters that Adam and Eddy were stuck with?

Total Chapters – 7 and I’m planning on finishing this week. My gifs will give you an idea of whose stories I’m diverging from their story during the season.   Any questions, concerns, ask away.

Posting begins on Sunday….

My parameters are below the cut;

Chapter 1

Words ~ 6400                  Rating ~ K+

Occurs immediately after the EQ cast the curse sending those from the Enchanted Forest to the Land Without Magic.

Wish Realm

WHook arrived at the docks to find his crew lounging around like the vermin they were, and with a loud bang woke them all. “Get up, you filthy bilge rats. Playtime’s over.”

They slowly roused, giving him enough attention for him to order, “I need the Jolly Roger ship shape before we set sail.  You have an hour.“

“But, WCaptain,” Smee interrupted, “you haven’t even told us where we’re going yet."

"We,” WHook boasted, “are going to the land without magic, Mr Smee.  Once the WEvil Queen casts her curse, I will finally get my chance to exact revenge on the Dark One."

"Actually,” the WEvil Queen sauntered across the dock, “no one’s going to be going anywhere. And neither will I,” she finished dejectedly, moving closer to where he was standing.

“Your majesty,” WHook gave her a confused look, “shouldn’t you be casting your curse?"

"Well, I would be,” she began, “if that insipid WSnow White and her WCharmless Prince hadn’t stopped me."

I am reblogging with my own comment to add that I had the pleasure of reading part of this fic already. If you are an OUAT fan who was willing to give season 7 a try even without Emma, but ended up disappointed in how the Wish Hook storyline was handled, I highly recommend this story. Wish Hook is still present, but he interacts with a very special character that I am sure CS fans will enjoy 🙂

Sudden, random feels? Yep!

—–

Out of the corner of her eye, Emma spotted the shit-eating grin on her husband’s face and sighed. “You can stop gloating at any time, now.”

“How dare you suggest such a thing?” Killian asked, mock innocence lacing his tone. “I am most certainly not gloating.”

In the rearview mirror, Emma spotted Neal, who held a book open in his lap, hiding a smirk. A sleeping Hope, exhausted from the long day, heard none of her parents’ teasing argument.

Again, Emma sighed. The kids’ first time at an amusement park certainly had not gone as planned.

Now that Hope was seven, it had been Emma’s idea to take her down to a New Hampshire amusement park for the day. When she’d asked her parents if she could take Neal as well, they’d readily agreed.

Emma was the only one in her entire family who had ever been on a ride more involved than a playground swing set. She wasn’t the most adventurous rider but she liked roller coasters and Ferris wheels and Tilt-a-Whirls and Scramblers. Her brother and her daughter liked popcorn and ice cream and fried dough and her husband enjoyed taking Hope all the new places he could. Why not try an amusement park?

Plenty of reasons, as it turned out.

Neal discovered on the Ferris wheel that he hated heights and as such refused to go on anything else that left the ground. Although Hope didn’t have a problem with heights, they all discovered quickly – and messily – that she couldn’t stomach anything that spun.
Thankfully, some sips of water and the promise of getting her face painted

settled her enough that they could stay.

The family was left with maybe three rides they could all go on together – the bumper cars, the antique cars, and the little steam train that went around the park. Everything else had to be enjoyed with careful coordination and one adult and child going on the ride while the other adult and child waited for them to return.

Emma again glanced up in the rearview mirror. The butterfly painted on Hope’s cheek had smudged while she napped. “Did you have a good day, Neal?” Emma asked, flicking her gaze to her brother.

“Even though heights are the worst, I did have a good time,” he said, smiling as he met his big sister’s gaze in the mirror. “The Tilt-a-Whirl is the best and I liked going after Killian in the bumper cars.”

“Oi, little mate,” Killian teased, turning over his shoulder to look at the boy, “you didn’t just ‘go after’ me, you chased me into a corner. That was hardly sporting.”

Neal shrugged. “Wasn’t my fault you couldn’t figure out how to get unstuck.”

The adults laughed and Killian turned around, letting the boy go back to his book. “And did you have a good day, love?” Killian asked his wife.

“I did,” Emma smiled. “We may have had a bit of a rough start but any day I get to go on the Tilt-a-Whirl five times in a row with my favorite little brother is a good time.” And any day she could be with her husband and daughter, to see the love in their eyes and the smiles on their faces … that was pretty much the most perfect day ever.

She didn’t voice that opinion, though. She simply sighed and said, “And I’m not even going to ask if you had a good day because the shit-eating grin on your face speaks for itself.”

“Of course, love,” Killian said as he glanced over his shoulder at his napping little pirate princess. “It’s not every day you discover that your daughter’s favorite amusement ride is the pirate ship.”

I’m not sure how I found it or how old it is, but I was interested in your post about the writers giving up control of canon. It was very weird how they treated the Wish Realm. Down to the very last episode they were contradictory themselves (WHook insisting to Rumple he’s real, versus Wish Rumple crumbling to dust when the real Rumple died, which seems to indicate the wish versions aren’t real). Do you think the writers left it unclear on purpose? If so, why?

captainswancygnet:

I think you may be talking about two of my posts. In this one I was replying to someone and I ended up listing the many different explanations given about the Wish Realm people and how different the rules are for each of them. And this post is the one where I mention the writers handing power to the viewers by making that part of the canon something each viewer can choose from.

But answering your question, no. I don’t believe for a second that the writers were purposely ambiguous about the Wish Realm. They simply didn’t know what they were doing. They didn’t know what they were doing in season 6 when they first came up with that silly realm, and they completely lost their minds and dignity in season 7 when they brought it back and proceeded to turn their own show into a joke.

Here’s what I think may have been going through their minds:

Season 6 – the Wish Realm is nothing but a means to an end: We need to find a way to make Emma learn a lesson (don’t even get me started on that one) while also having the usual AU with aging characters and comic relief (remember when everyone hated Wish Hook because he was old and fat and how awful the show was for using him as comic relief? But then when he was young and handsome again, he was the best). None of the characters are real because we don’t want people to hate Regina for killing Wish Snow and Wish Charming. But Wish Robin Hood is totally real because we brought Sean Maguire back and we have no idea how else we can get Regina interacting with Robin again. Hopefully no one will notice this doesn’t make sense. We’re not here for anyone to poke at plot holes anyway.

Season 7 – the Wish Realm continues to be nothing but a means to an end and becomes the finest example of writers wanting to have it both ways: We need to have Colin as Hook, we can’t give up on that because most of the audience is already flying out the window. We need to find a way for Hook to stay on the show but without Emma and without destroying Captain Swan (I am still thanking all the Gods above that this was the only wise thought going through their minds). Oh, yes, let’s bring back the Wish Realm and create a new version of Captain Hook! But it can’t be a version too different from the real, popular Hook. That way we can have our cake and eat it too.

Hopefully no one will notice this doesn’t make sense. We’re not here for anyone to poke at plot holes anyway.

With these many contradictions, I maintain that each of us is free to choose what’s our canon: if you want to to believe the WR and the Wish people are real, wonderful. Canon supports your views. If you want to believe the WR and the Wish people are not real, wonderful. Canon also supports your views.

captainswancygnet:

It doesn’t. It was the show wanting to have its cake and eat it too.

  • First the Wish Realm is fake and so is everyone in it, but for some reason Wish Robin is real and he is a completely different person from OG Robin because … reasons.
  • Then we have Wish Hook who is real too, but who is exactly the same character as OG Hook until a certain point because… reasons.
  • Then there’s Wish Snowing who were totally fake because… reasons.
  • Then there’s Wish Henry being absolutely real even though there are no signs of wish versions of his parents: apparently Wish Emma never existed, nor did Wish Baelfire (Wish Rumple was said to be suuuuuuper evil because he had no Wish Belle nor Wish Baelfire to humanize him – maybe that ridiculous Neal painting we saw in 6×11 was an allucination?). How did Wish Henry even come to life if neither of his parents existed in that realm??

More under the cut.
